“WE GO, THEN,” MAXIMUS said, giving his now-healed wrist of careless glance, then unrolling his sleeves and shrugging into his jacket.

Bishop Balan had returned with a black robe, and I was wearing it now. I followed them out of the room, holding my heavy garment up away from my feet, feeling rather clumsy, and though it would take some getting used to, I was grateful for the hood that concealed my new, hideous features.

As we marched through the palace, Maximus ordered any Sentries we ran into to follow us. By the time we got to the stable, a group of ten stood behind us.

Horses were saddled for everyone. The stable hands worked hurriedly, their early-dawn sluggishness quickly vanishing in the face of the unusual request. They ran to and fro, looking panicked. Yet, they got the beasts ready in record time, handing them off one by one, starting with the King’s black stallion.

When one of the stable hands brought Jigsaw and another gelding for Bishop Balan me, the horses spooked trying to retreat. Maximus himself snatched their reins and stared at each horse, muttering a few words. The animals calmed down and allowed us to mount them.

It seemed that having full vampire blood had its advantages. Maximus didn’t look like a hideous creature, and he could command the horses into submission.

Maximus led the way out of the palace with Balan and me riding right behind him, and the Sentries trailing after us, still clueless as to their role, which was simply to provide an escort for their King and draw notice.

They served their purpose right, their presence stirring the city out of its morning slumber and sending curious residents to their windows to spy.

Twenty minutes later, as the sun began to rise in the horizon and above the city walls illuminating our path and setting the White Palace aglow, we found ourselves at the foot of the hill that led to Lovina’s gates.

“I go from here,” I told Maximus, peeling away from the group and trotting toward the woods that ran along the path and the White Palace.

He nodded and continued up the hill. Everyone watched me curiously as they passed but said nothing. As soon as I was out of sight, I tied Jigsaw to a tree, then ran under the cover of the canopy along the path, keeping as close as I could to our contingent.

As the King reached the top, I watched from afar. Sentries had lined up atop the turrets, bows and arrows in hand. The gates were closed, a formidable barrier for any human, but nothing that could stop Maximus or even me.

Calmly, the Black King led his stallion forward, ahead of his retinue. He faced the gate and the archers with cool detachment. “I wish to parlay with the White Queen,” he said, his voice booming.

One of the Sentries who was positioned on the wall turned and disappeared. The King waited for a few long minutes until the Sentry came back, accompanied by someone else.
